Brahms (1833-1897) was born in Hamburg to a father who was a double bass player. He showed a talent for the piano from an early age, and from the age of 10 he played the piano in restaurants and taverns to help his family earn a living. Even as a young man, he was skeptical about his own works and discarded quite a few of them. This "German Requiem" was also conceived when he was 24 years old, but he never completed it and put it away for a long time. His mother died in 1865, which triggered the completion of the entire piece. In 1867, two years before the premiere, only the three movements that had been completed were given a trial performance, but the audience's reaction was terrible, and even the tongue-in-cheek critic Hanslick wrote a sarcastic review.However, Brahms did not give up and continued to compose. After repeated trials, the complete work was finally premiered in 1869 by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by Reinecke, and the true value of the piece became known. As you know, the piece is grand and profound, with a German text and advanced counterpoint used here and there.
