Bryan (1876-1972) was known for writing long, complex works. The two symphonies on this album are relatively accessible in terms of length (alone): No. 20, written in 1962, is more compact than expected, with a sophisticated theme and expressive power. And No. 25, written in 1966, is more classically structured and has a beautiful melody. But ...... Brian. There is no simple way to do this. Look at the arrangement of this movement. One movement is subdivided into several parts and changes its expression at a dizzying pace. It seems to end, but it does not. And before you know it, you are transported to another world. It is addictive. The "Fantastic Variations on an Old Rhyme" at the beginning of the piece is one of his early works and shows the influence of Sibelius, R. Strauss, and many other composers who were very popular at the time. This is something to smile about. Naxos Japan
