Mahler's (1860-1911) "Song of the Earth" is subtitled "Symphony for Tenor, Alto, and Orchestra." It was written in 1908, the year before Mahler resigned from the Vienna Court Opera, where he had worked for many years, the death of his eldest daughter, and his own diagnosis of heart disease, a series of rather sobering matters. And he also believed in the "ninth jinx ...... that Bruckner and Beethoven could only write up to the ninth. Perhaps that is why he did not give the piece a number, but gave it the status of just a "symphony" or "serial song". The man who drowns in wine, weeps in the silence of autumn, and bids farewell to the land he loves. The pessimism and sweet-sour recollections of youth that pervade the entire piece, together with the concluding words "ewig (forever)..." in the last movement, are painfully poignant. Naxos Japan
