Weinberg has recently become increasingly popular as one of the outstanding Russian composers of the second half of the 20th century, comparable to Shostakovich. Several labels have released Weinberg's works, and NAXOS has released several symphonies and an album of instrumental music, mainly cello works. Before writing symphonies and string quartets, he believed that writing violin sonatas would "help deepen his compositional technique and idiom," and these six sonatas are considered to be a very interesting group of works that provide an insight into the evolution of his compositional technique. The first sonata begins with a subdued tone, followed by the second sonata, which is full of emotional swells, and the third sonata, which is strongly influenced by Shostakovich, shows a more Jewish style. The fourth, with its interesting changes in each movement, the fifth, considered to be his masterpiece, and the sixth, a unique piece of music that seems to abandon the duo format (at first it was mistakenly given the same work number as the "Sonata No. 4 for Viola Sonata Solo"), are all unique pieces. The "Sonatine," with its folk-like melody and familiar classical melody, is one of the most frequently performed pieces in his oeuvre. Naxos Japan
