Two song cycles by Messiaen (1908–1992). In fact, the loss of family members he held dear served as the inspiration for both sets of songs. “Three Melodies” is the crystallization of his feelings for his mother, who had passed away three years earlier. And “Harawi” was written around the time his first wife, Claire Delbos, was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Yet neither work conveys a sense of despair; instead, they are filled only with boundless hope and a sense of ecstasy. These are masterpieces that vividly convey Messiaen’s sense of “death” and “love.” Please enjoy the dazzling piano parts, the richly colored vocal feast, and the wordplay so intense it almost numbs the senses.
