This is a collection of works by one of China's most celebrated composers, Zhou Long (1953-), best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning compositions. Taiko Rhyme," co-commissioned by Brigham Young University and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, unravels the history of traditional Japanese taiko (Taigu means drum in Chinese), originally tracing its origins back to Buddhist doctrine and the "Taigu" tradition that emerged from Chinese court ceremonies. From there, it evolved into Gagaku (ancient Japanese court music), Noh theater, and various other forms as a means of communication. However, it is said that Taigu has barely survived in China, with only a few fragments of it remaining in the court music of the Tang Dynasty. This "Taiko Rhyme" will look back on such ancient art forms and their traditions by adding a variety of percussion (played on Japanese drums at the time of the first performance) to the current orchestral ensemble.Commissioned by the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, "Tiger Gate 1839" is a joint work with Chen Yi (1953-), which commemorates the "public disposal of 1,000 tons of opium (allegedly incinerated)" in Guangdong Province in 1839, and is an exciting piece of music in four movements. The third piece, entitled "Enlightened" means " means "to be enlightened," and is a magnificent piece of music about the struggle of the original world, peace, light and love. Naxos Japan
