These elegant-sounding chamber music works embody the very essence of courtly Baroque music. Like the previously released Op. 1 (8.557248), this is a collection of seven sonatas, featuring three master musicians—Holloway and Linden, who is now also active as a conductor—who deliver a refined and graceful sound. This recording was praised in *American Record Guide* as “the finest recording of this collection by Buxtehude.” Born half a century after Schütz—known as the “Father of German Music”—and nearly half a century before J.S. Bach, Buxtehude served as a bridge between Schütz, the founder of German Protestant music, and Bach, the great master. Buxtehude’s distinctive style—marked by unexpected wit, virtuosity, and powerful expressiveness—is strikingly evident in the “Seven Sonatas” (Op. 2). Particularly noteworthy are the use of stylized dance forms in “Sonata No. 1” and the improvisational passages in “Sonata No. 5,” which could be described as “fantastic in style.”
