Danil Shafran, a great cellist who represented the Soviet school of cello playing, frequently competed against the young Mstislav Rostropovich in competitions and shared awards with him. He studied under Alexander Sitrimel at the Leningrad Conservatory, served as a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from 1943, won first prize at the Prague International Cello Competition in 1950, and later served as a judge for the Tchaikovsky Competition. This album features a selection of masterpieces, including Schumann’s “Traumerei” and Tchaikovsky’s “The Swan,” as well as works that were not originally composed for the cello but were arranged by Shafran’s colleagues in the early 20th century or earlier. This collection of encores showcases the outstanding technique and beautiful, lyrical tone of this master musician, who was hailed as the “Poet of the Cello.” Tokyo M Plus
