Description:

[Starring André Schuen! Ivan Fischer’s Rich Interpretation, Featuring a Stellar Cast of Singers] Ivan Fischer, who has recorded numerous acclaimed performances for Channel Classics in recent years, kicks off a series of releases on the label featuring three of Mozart’s late masterpieces with *Don Giovanni*. While video releases exist for works like *The Abduction from the Seraglio* and *Cosi fan tutte* performed with period instrument ensembles, it is a true delight to be able to fully savor every nuance of this latest Mozart interpretation—featuring the highly trusted Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer, and an elite cast of singers—on CD. He has contributed a note to the booklet, stating that he wishes to leave it to the listener’s judgment whether to condemn Don Giovanni’s misdeeds and support his punishment, or to love him and view his fate as a tragedy; accordingly, he has adopted the Vienna premiere version, which concludes with the protagonist’s descent into hell. The title role is sung with great dignity by the up-and-coming André Schuen, whose recital at the Tokyo Spring Music Festival in April 2026 was also highly acclaimed; he is joined by the dignified Mia Persson as Donna Elvira and Maria Bengtsson, who is also gaining attention as an interpreter of R. Strauss, and Repollero, portrayed by Luca Pisaroni—whose dynamic performance stands out thanks to his distinctive contributions to 18th-century opera—the singing fully showcases each singer’s unique strengths and is well worth listening to. The fortepiano, serving as the basso continuo, enhances the dramatic unfolding with a diverse range of sounds—from harpsichord-like, crisp attacks to a sweet pianissimo. Fisher’s interpretation, which brings all these elements together with the orchestra into a tightly woven narrative, is rich and deeply rewarding to listen to, and the tension that builds to the finale after a dramatic progression is simply breathtaking. This is a masterful performance that already has us eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series. The Teatro Olimpico, completed in 1585 and modeled after ancient Roman theaters, is a historic building also known for having been visited by the Tenshō Mission to Europe. The sound recording of the performance there, captured by Jared Sachs—founder of Channel Classics and a renowned producer and engineer—is also drawing significant attention. Naxos Japan
