This ambitious program illuminates the musical lineage cultivated in the city of music, Vienna. From Mozart's [1756-1791] masterpieces that foreshadowed Romanticism's arrival, to the farewell sounds with which Webern [1883-1945] and Korngold [1897-1957] heralded its end, the evolution of the "Soul of Vienna" spanning over 150 years is vividly depicted. At the album's core lies Mozart's 15th Quartet, a work the ensemble has refined since their early days. Its dramatic expression, revealing anxiety and anguish, resonates profoundly with Korngold's poignant nostalgia, penned just before his exile, and Webern's intimate narrative style.
