Walter Niemann, a composer from Hamburg, studied under Humperdinck and Reinecke in Leipzig, and later worked as a music journalist, contributing reviews to the "Leipzig Newspaper. After writing critical biographies of Brahms and Sibelius, he devoted himself to composition, and left behind about 1,000 piano pieces, mostly in the late Romantic style, classified under the work number 189. The "Ivy and Roses" is a simple song-like work in five movements in ABA form. Ceramics: Figurines and Paintings from Famous Porcelain Manufactories is a suite of eleven pieces based on figurines and localities of specific porcelain manufactories, such as Meissen and Royal Copenhagen, with Japanese porcelain featured in the fifth piece. The fifth piece, "Serenade," has an impressive swinging 6/8 time signature reminiscent of the boat song from Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann. Pictures in the Forest" is a collection of short pieces depicting the scenery of the Fichtel Mountains in southern Bavaria, Germany.The "Little Marburg Sonata," written in 1942, is the 12th of Niemann's 23 sonatas, and is characterized by its clear tonality and classical style.
