Description:
【The Final Volume of the Recording Project Spotlighting Werner, "Haydn's Predecessor"!】 Gregor Josef Werner was an 18th-century Austrian composer. He studied under Antonio Caldara, a Venetian-born deputy Kapellmeister at the Vienna court. From 1728, he served as Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court in Eisenstadt, holding that position until his death. The man appointed as deputy Kapellmeister to assist him in his later years, and who succeeded him after his death, was none other than Joseph Haydn. It was Lajos Rovatkai (1933–), a Hungarian-born keyboardist and conductor long active in Germany's early music scene, who brought Werner back into the spotlight, having been forgotten in music history, overshadowed by Haydn's fame. A specialist in Baroque music at the Viennese court, Rovatkai dedicated over 40 years to rediscovering and researching Werner. Starting in 2021, he launched a recording project of Werner's works in collaboration with La Festa Musicale, a dynamic German period instrument orchestra. This album marks the fifth and final installment of that project. This volume features two festive Masses composed by Werner in his later years. The Mass "Adorans Dominus" is a magnificent work composed for the Feast of the Holy Trinity. The Mass "Ibeo, inverno" is based on a motet of his own composition using a passage from the Old Testament's "Song of Solomon" as its text; that motet is also included. The Mass blends choral elements using traditional Viennese counterpoint with solo parts incorporating operatic elements, showcasing an exceptional sense of balance and vivid coloration between vocal and instrumental parts. It stands as a valuable example bridging late Baroque and Classical music. The performing ensemble, La Festa Musicale, is an up-and-coming German period instrument orchestra founded in 2014. On the audite label, they have been actively recording, focusing on Werner's series of religious works, including "Bach Reconstructed" (AU97816), a reimagining of Bach's compositions, and "Three Antonios of the Grand Canal" (AU97809), featuring three Venetian Baroque composers named Antonio (Lotti, Caldara, Vivaldi) in "Three Antonios of the Grand Canal" (AU97809).This album, concluding the Werner Project in collaboration with Rovato Kai, features our concertmaster, Baroque violinist Anne-Marie Haller, conducting and playing while leading a skilled ensemble. Together with outstanding soloists, she delivers a magnificent performance that conveys the charm of Werner's lesser-known Mass. Also noteworthy is the superb recording by the team led by world-renowned sound engineer Rutger Beckenhoff. Naxos Japan
