Description:

The composition is very close to that of the first performance. A new masterpiece that approaches the sound that captivated the king's sensitive sensibilities. In the mid-17th century, Lully broke new ground in opera with a French libretto by creating a naturalistic narrative in music that seemed to capture the charm of theater directly in song. Now, however, an even more groundbreaking recording of the complete work has been released. Alexis Kosenko's ensemble, which merged with the late J.-C. Margoire's ancient instrumental ensemble and is now dedicated to the thorough reproduction of Baroque orchestral music, has produced an exceptionally profound interpretation of the work, featuring Vidal in the title role, Jans and Piaux in the female leads, and Christoyannis, Benanyi, Vichak and other distinguished singers from the forefront of the art. The string ensemble was composed of the "king's" singers of the time. The string ensemble is composed of 24 players (including two viol players for bass) in accordance with the "King's 24 Violins" of the time, and based on historical documents, seven altricorders are played simultaneously in some passages. The orchestra is based on the latest research results, and is a thorough reproduction of the orchestration as it was at the time of the first performance. The orchestra includes such busy virtuosos as Beatrice Martin on clavecin, André Henrich and two others on strings, and Jeremy Papaserzio on woodwinds. In keeping with the composer's intentions, the orchestral singing is kept to a minimum, and all the singers give a tasteful performance of the tragic love story from the prologue to the end of the opera, with the original dramatic effect of the music.
