Description:
Johann Stamitz was born in Bohemia, learned music from his organist father, and after studying at the University of Prague, joined the Mannheim Court Orchestra in 1741, where he was promoted to principal violinist and then court music director. He is known for his more than 50 symphonies, his contribution to the establishment of the sonata form, his use of wind instruments, and his bold use of dynamics, which led the Mannheim school of music. Many of his instrumental works, which were not published during his lifetime, circulated in manuscript form, and a series of symphonies in the collection of the Darmstadt University Library are known as the "Darmstadt Symphonies. They were created around 1750, and some of the transcriptions are believed to have involved Graupner, the chief musicologist. The symphonies on the album are string-centered, with horns added only on two pieces. Almost without exception, the symphonies are in three movements (rapid, slow, and rapid), and some of them have a minuet as the last movement. The symphonies do not use the abrupt changes in intensity that were considered characteristic of the Mannheim School, and have a sound similar to late Baroque music. Naxos Japan
