A Christmas album that conveys the sophistication of 18th century Spanish music! Recasens & La Grande Chapelle, which has released a number of notable albums from LAUDA, presents a complete recording of Christmas music by José de Nebula, a great Spanish organist active in the royal family from the early to mid 18th century. Nebula, a contemporary of Hasse and Galuppi, was born in Aragon, the son of an organist, was appointed organist to the Spanish royal family in 1724, and later became deputy music director of the royal chapel and colleague of the great keyboard musician D. Scarlatti. While working to expand the repertoire, he also contributed to the renewal of musical styles by including many works by the latest Italian composers in his repertoire. The pieces, each lasting from 8 to 15 minutes, are full of melodies in major and minor keys that are familiar from the latest operas, and the stylish orchestral sound is pleasant and fulfilling. The beautiful voices of the eight vocalists, including the Portuguese bass-baritone Hugo Oliveira, make the most of the verses and melodious polyphonic development with clarity.Eva Saladin, who has been increasingly active as a soloist in recent years, will be the concertmaster, and Gabriele Cassone, a veteran trumpet player, will join her. The instrumental ensemble will consist of an oboe, horn, two trumpets, and ten string players (3/3/2/1/1) plus an organ.
