Tracing the history of French keyboard music in the 17th century, this album explores the sounds that the Sun King became familiar with from his childhood. This album traces the process of the establishment of French keyboard music using the clavecin, a model introduced to the French royal court for the young Sun King Louis XIV. This recording is based on the original instrument, which was meticulously reproduced by Emile Jobin, an antique instrument maker known for his trustworthiness to such masters as Leonhardt, Beaumont, and Verré. The music played on the instruments that the king, who was to make his name in Europe as a rare art lover, would have heard as a child is a variety of French clavecin music that survives in manuscript scores from the mid-17th century and printed scores from the latter half of the century.Starting from the imitation of lute music, which was regarded as the ideal of solo instrumental music, through the application of French court music and organ music, and eventually discovering the unique musical language of clavesan, Brice Saieux, who is at the forefront of the French-speaking scene, gives a sincere and sensitive performance of a number of masterpieces that show the process of discovery of a unique musical language. The recording engineer was Ricercar. The recording engineer is Jérôme Lejeune, who has been pursuing the sound of ancient instruments on the Ricercar label for nearly half a century. This is an excellent project that brings us as close as possible to the truth of the beauty of music enjoyed by kings of the past, down to the subtle nuances of the ornaments spun out in a rich, pure, and beautiful sound.
