Description:
A tribute album to composer couple Elena Firsova and Dmitry Smirnov. The two met at the Moscow Conservatory, and through encounters with their teachers Edison Denisov and Philip Hershkovitz, they spent half a century together in creative pursuits, developing a passion for dissident music and a unique musical style. After 1979, they left their native country in search of creative freedom, moving to England in 1991. Firsova was deeply influenced by the works of the poet Mandelishtam, and composed many chamber cantatas and songs. Smirnov left behind a rich artistic legacy, including more than 200 musical works, as well as poems and books.
The Lousasdale Chamber Players, formed in 2019, held a concert that year featuring Firsova and the Smirnovs. Following the success of the concert, they commissioned new works for Filsova, "The Four Seasons," and for Smirnov, "to be or not to be, to live or not to die...," which are performed here.Also included at the end of the album is Firsova's quartet, a memorial work dedicated to her husband Smirnov, who died of a new type of coronavirus infection.
