Ferenc Farkas is known for his flamboyant and charming dance music incorporating Hungarian folk songs, but this album also showcases his innovative side: his "Preludes and Fugues" from the 1940s make flexible use of the twelve-tone technique. The ballet music "The Clever Students" symbolizes the golden age of postwar Hungarian art, and its effective use of folk and popular music was highly acclaimed both at home and abroad, where it was performed nearly 100 times in 20 years. In 1952, Farkas, at the height of his powers as a composer and educator, published his only symphony. Subtitled "In Memoriam of 1945," the symphony was criticized as being incompatible with the ideology of the regime, and was only performed and broadcast a few times. The first and second movements have since been performed as independent works, but the other movements have not been performed for a long time, and this recording brings the entire work back to the present day.
