Janne Nisonen, Tapiola Sinfonietta

A popular series, the complete symphonies of Ferdinand Ries. The third collection includes two symphonies, No. 3 and No. 8. Symphony No. 3 was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of London and premiered at the Philharmonic Society on May 15, 1815. In the first movement, the first theme appears in E-flat major, but it is immediately transposed, and the second theme, which follows, is unusually in C major, confusing the listener. The main key remains unclear until the second theme is transposed to E-flat major in the recapitulation section. In the second and third movements of the compact Minuet, the flute plays an active role and the solo violin creates an impressive chamber music-like middle section. In the fourth movement, a variation of the first theme of the first movement is used throughout, and the entire work is closely narrated. The E-flat-major symphony, which is believed to be No. 8, was not published during his lifetime and is not given a work number. There is some confusion as to when it was composed and published, and it is likely that it was premiered at the Niederrhein Festival in 1825 and was also performed in 1834. It has a similar atmosphere to No. 3, but with an emphasis on unity between the movements, especially in the thematic connection through chromatic progressions. With this work, Ries demonstrates his technical development as a symphonic composer on par with Beethoven. The Nissonen disc focuses on the explosive energy and colorful aspects of the piece, and the performance is very exciting, making good use of the repetition of modulations. Sayaka Kinoshiro leads the second violin on this release as well. Naxos Japan
