German composer Günter Raphael studied composition with Arnold Mendelssohn beginning in 1925, and the following year his First Symphony was premiered in Leipzig by Wilhelm Furtwängler. He later taught at the Leipzig Conservatory, but his Jewish origins limited his activities in Germany in the 1930s. However, he received a warm welcome in Finland, where he was popular and his works were broadcast on the radio.Then he met organist Ellis Mortenson (1890-1957). Mortenson was a highly regarded performer who studied in Germany and became the first organ professor at the Sibelius Conservatory in 1939. He defended Raphael's organ works in the traditional form based on the melodies of Protestant hymns, and in 1933 gave the Finnish premiere of "Partita," Op. 22-1. The "Fantasy, Fugue, Partita, and Passacaglia on Finnish Chorales" composed in 1939 was dedicated to Mortenson and premiered by him in September 1940 at the Mikael Agricola Church in Helsinki. Mårtensson continued to introduce Raphael's works, premiering Raphael's Organ Concerto, Op. 57 in 1938, as well as other unpublished works. (Naxos Japan)
