Description:

[Reissue of all of the violin sonatas recorded acoustically by one of Britain's leading pre-war duos]. Albert Sammons was born into a shoemaker's family in 1886 and began playing violin under the tutelage of his father and brother, who were avid amateur violinists. Beecham heard him playing a Mendelssohn concerto on his own violin and recruited him to join his own orchestra. He was highly acclaimed by Thibaud, Ysaye, Casals, and others, and became one of the leading violinists in England. His recording of Elgar in particular is still considered one of the must-hear recordings of the same piece. William Murdoch was born in 1888 in Australia to a family of engineers. While studying to become a lawyer, he received a scholarship to study piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Although Murdoch was about to pursue a career in law despite winning two gold medals during his studies, he decided to become a musician when he was selected to tour with the famous singer Clara Butt and received high acclaim. Sammons and Murdoch met and hit it off during World War I in a military band of the British Kingsguard Infantry Regiment (Grenadier Guards Band). The duo was highly acclaimed as equals, which was unusual at the time when duos of a popular violinist and his favorite accompanist were the norm. This disc is a reissue of all the violin sonatas that the duo recorded acoustically for British Columbia. Please note that each piece has been "shortened" to match the recording time of the SP recordings. According to the label, these are all the first ever recordings of these pieces, albeit shortened versions. The Coleridge-Taylor and Ierland recordings are particularly valuable in that they were recorded the day after the duo gave their first performance. The sound quality is limited because the recording is over 100 years old, but the noise is fairly well sorted out, and those interested in the history of violin playing, including the use of vibrato and portamento, will find this to be a fascinating listen. The 12-page booklet contains rare photographs and an interesting 6-page commentary by Jonathan Woolf, an expert on historical recordings (English only). According to the booklet, these "abridged versions" were created by the two performers (sometimes in the presence of the composer) after much trial and error and deliberation in order to keep the musical persuasiveness, which is another valuable testimony to the recording history.
