Description:
The composer Camille Erlanger was a contemporary of Debussy, Ducasse, Mahler, and others, and in his lifetime was a major figure in the French opera world along with Messager and Gagne, among others. His works have never been recorded, as if their popularity during his lifetime was a lie, and a complete recording of his operas is a rare find. After studying at the Paris Conservatory under Dreve and Matthias, a former student of Chopin, Erlanger won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1888 for his cantata "Vereda" and went to Italy, where he completed "St. Julien" in three acts based on Flaubert's novel that same year, making him a popular composer. The Witch" was published in 1912, just before the outbreak of World War I. It is based on a libretto by André, the son of Victorian Sardou, who wrote the original play of Puccini's "Tosca". The story revolves around Soraya, a woman feared by the people as a witch. The music is filled with the best of the post-Wagnerian late Romantic generation, and the orchestrations are skillfully orchestrated.The orchestra and chorus of the Conservatoire de Geneve, which has made many commercial recordings, give a lively performance under the direction of Guillaume Tournier, who won a Record Academy Award for his recording of the incidental music to Grieg's "Peer Gynt". The performance is reminiscent of the Paris of the Belle Époque period. Naxos Japan
