Interlude for String Quintet WAB113 Performers CD1] Christoph von Dohnányi (conductor), Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (now Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin) CD2] Ferdinand Stangler (2nd viola), Vienna Konzerthaus String Quartet Total recording time: 124 min. CD1] December 8, 1963, Köpenick, Berlin (stereo, live/air-checked by Berlin Radio) CD2] 1956, Brahmssaal, Musikverein, Vienna (MONO/ First LP: reissued by Vanguard VRS 480) Volume 4 of Bruckner From Archive, a CD release of the complete symphonies with selected first-ever recordings from the American Bruckner Society's broadcast sources (airchecks), is now available in stereo live performance of DHONANI's Fifth Symphony as a young man. This project is a CD release of the complete symphonies from selected sources, primarily the extensive aircheck tapes of John F. Berkey, the executive director of the Bruckner Society of America, who was also active in the broadcasting industry. It is also noteworthy that the association's president and Bruckner scholar Benjamin Korstvedt is in charge of supervising and writing the commentary. The CDs have been released in chronological order of composition, with the two symphonies from the late 1870s recorded on CD 1, Symphony No. 5 performed by the then 34-year-old Christoph von Dohnányi and the Rundfunk Symphonieorchester Berlin. The orchestra is now the Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin, which was founded in 1946 as the RIAS Symphony Orchestra. CD 2 includes the String Quintet and Interludes by the Wiener Konzerthaus String Quartet and Stangler on viola. CD3 features the Vienna Konzerthaus String Quartet and the Stangler Viola. In this session recording for the Vanguard label, Korstvedt says, "The use of portamento, the inclination toward lyrical expression, and the romantic tempo setting and phrasing may strike some as old-fashioned, but they are typical of the traditional Viennese style of carefully depicting the emotions and emotional atmosphere of the music, a style that is now largely forgotten. However, the Viennese traditional style of carefully depicting the emotions and emotional atmosphere of the music is typical of the Viennese style, and it retains something that has almost been lost today. The Konzerthaus SQ performances have been reissued repeatedly on the Westminster label, while this Vanguard disc has been omitted from reissues, so this is a long-awaited CD release. Although the source material for the symphonies in this series has not been disclosed other than the fact that they were first recorded on the Westminster label, the symphonies have been selected for their unique significance in Bruckner's performance history and for the conductors who made important contributions to it.
