Description:
Victor Bendix (1851-1926):. Contents 1-4. Symphony No. 1 in C major "Ascension" Op. 16(1877-78) Adagio ma non troppo. Allegro vivace 3. III. Marcia solenne. Andante sostenuto Allegro animato Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 25(1891-92) 5. I. Fantasie Molto vivace. Lento, ma non troppo. Performer Malmö Symphony Orchestra Joachim Gustafsson (conductor) Recorded June 7-10, 2022 at Malmö Live Concert Hall (Denmark) Total recording time: 69 min. Born in Copenhagen, Bendix studied with Nils Goese and J.P.E. Hartmann before turning to the "new music" of Liszt and Wagner. He was involved in the Danish premieres of "Lohengrin" and "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," and in 1872 attended the "Ninth" concert conducted by Wagner in Bayreuth. From the four symphonies he left behind, this album contains his first and third symphonies. His first orchestral work, No. 1 is a symphonic poem about the inner transformation of a mountain climber on his way to a mountaintop temple and his awakening to a higher dimension of existence beyond human understanding, and is said to have been a breakthrough in Danish composition in all aspects of conception, form, and compositional technique, influencing Langó's Symphony No. 1 as well. It is said to have influenced Rango's First Symphony.Although No. 3 has no title, the first movement, entitled Fantasy, the second movement, named in German "Bunte Bilder" (colorful pictures), and the melancholic third movement, which is the heart of the work, convey a sense of introspective thought bordering on resignation. Swedish conductor Joachim Gustafsson, who studied with Switner and Sjöggerstam, and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra give a performance full of ups and downs, bringing out the charm of the work.
