The composer Carlo Gesualdo was born as a nobleman in the kingdom of Naples in southern Italy, and is famous for the incident in which he seized his wife from a prominent family and had her slaughtered. He was exposed to the extremely refined court culture in Ferrara, the family home of his second marriage, and after returning to his estate, he kept his wife away and devoted himself to creating in solitude, leaving behind many atypical masterpieces that make full use of the exquisite harmonic language that strongly suggests the influence of the Ferrara court. Among his works, the fifth and sixth volumes of his Madrigale (choral works) and a collection of religious works from his later years, in which he had a printing press brought into his castle to print before his eyes because of his distrust of people, are particularly famous. The fourth and final volume of the four madrigales published in 1596, shortly after his return from Ferrara to the Kingdom of Naples, is also a remarkable collection that shows the development of his style from the early days of his career as a composer to the distinctive style of his later years. In 2017, at the age of 70, Hilleweghe said in an interview, "In the time I have left, I will only work with music that I find truly meaningful. The result is a new masterpiece with an interpretation that has been polished to the last detail. The polyphonic patterns created by the interplay of the singers' voices are not dictated by the harmonic changes characteristic of Gesualdo, but rather convey the schemes of the sound movements in an extremely convincing manner. This is an epoch-making masterpiece that will teach you the significance of familiarizing yourself with this collection of songs. (Naxos Japan)
