Isolde Menges

Description:

Isolde Menges is featured in the series introducing the students of the famous teacher Leopold Auer. The world premiere recordings of Bach's Chaconne, Beethoven's Violin Concerto, and others are reissued! At the age of 16, Menges joined Auer in Petersburg. At his concerto debut in London in 1913, where he played Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto and Lalo's Spanish Symphony in one concert, Auer was described at the time as having "remarkable bowing technique, The reviews at the time praised his "remarkable bowing technique, muddy sound, and clean, crisp style," and reported that he showed "childlike delight when demonstrating his mastery" and that he "played the difficult passages so fast that the conductor had to tell him to slow down, but his brilliant playing was a spectacle in itself. The brilliant performance was a sight in itself. This success led to performances in London with Wood and Walter, and in Amsterdam with the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Mengelberg in concertos by Beethoven and Brahms. 1916 marked his American debut, although he remained in North America until the end of World War I. After returning to England in 1919, he avoided long travel and worked mainly in England, After returning to England in 1919, he avoided long journeys and performed mainly in England. He appeared repeatedly at the Proms. He was also active in chamber music, performing Beethoven's complete string quartets with his eponymous quartet and winning acclaim for his piano trio. At the Royal College of Music in England, he taught younger students for 38 years, and the Isolde Menges Prize was established in honor of his achievements. Menges recorded mainly for HMV (Columbia). Of particular note on this disc are Bach's Chaconne, Beethoven's Violin Concerto, and Vaughan Williams' Aged Lark. The performances reissued here are the first ever recordings of these masterpieces, although today there are countless recordings of them as masterpieces among masterpieces.Menges' playing is generally clear and free from stagnation, especially in Beethoven's 3rd movement, but there is no shortage of emotion in Bach's Air (Aria on the G line), with its calm tempo and skillful portamento. There is a loud noise in Schubert's Ave Maria and Wieniawski's A la Zingara, which is present in the original recording (the latter also sounds like a cuckoo clock ringing). The booklet (English only) includes five pages of commentary by Wayne Kiley, four photographs, one portrait, and three photographs of Joseph (Giuseppe) Garneri Filius Andrea of 1714, which Menges used.
