Description:
Blessed with a musical environment from an early age, Poulenc developed his talent without any specialized musical training, and by the end of his teens he was already a pianist and composer with a special place among Parisian artists. In this album of his early works, we can enjoy Poulenc's typical compositions with grace, wit, and unique orchestration in chamber ensemble and song. The recordings include "Three Indeterminate Movements," written in 1918 under Satie's influence and later arranged for nine instruments; "Animal Poems," a collection of songs on poems by Apollinaire; "The Unintelligible Gendarme," a play for wind instruments and voice with a libretto by Cocteau and Radiguet; and "Max Jacobs," a work for wind ensemble and song, premiered in 1921. Four Songs of Max Jacob" for song, and "French Suite," a bold orchestration based on a work by 16th-century composer Claude Gervaise. Hear them in the skillful ensemble of the Manchester Camerata, led by conductor John Andrews, who was born in Nairobi, studied music and history at Cambridge University, and has won awards at the Béla Bartók International Opera Conducting Competition.
