Mondonville, who had already recorded many grand motets (church orchestral works) and music for the stage, was a popular composer of the mid-18th century who, along with the great master Rameau, was patronized by Madame de Pompadour, the official concubine of King Louis XV of France. The Carnival on Mount Parnassus" was premiered in 1749, when he and Rameau were at the height of their fame, and was a great success. The entire work has never been recorded in its entirety, although Niquet, Vaschhagee, and other brilliant musicians of the classical music scene have recorded the famous scene from time to time. 26 string players are featured, including 4 each of flute, oboe, and bassoon, with a pair of horns, timpani, and pipes and tablatures. The recording is the first time it has been made.The conductor Alexis Kosenko, who has recently been making headlines for his performances on ancient instruments in a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque to the early Romantic period, will lead the ensemble in bringing out the full beauty of this melodious and exquisite work. Together with Blondale, Guillemette, Vidal, and other famous singers of the European opera world of today, he will bring the story of Apollo, the sun god who loves a young girl, Licorice, in an ideal world where shepherds live, to life in the modern age with rich ups and downs. As the title "Heroic Dance Theatre" suggests, many of the numbers are full of energy. The recording features the best of Mondonville's natural and melodious sound, and the excellent old instrumental orchestra and the excellent singing of the music on the eve of the Classical period.
