Description:

100th Anniversary of Ferruccio Busoni's Death! From the Florence May Festival, Busoni's great opera "Doctor Faust" will be performed. Late at night, Faust opens a book of mysteries in the magic circle and summons the devil. He makes a contract with the demon Mephistopheles, who appears, to receive ultimate wisdom and freedom in exchange for his soul. The two kill a man who seeks revenge for the abandonment of his sister in the church in Munster, and in Parma, Faust seduces the Duchess and elopes with her.A short time later, Mephistopheles appears before Faust when he visits a tavern in Wittenberg where students are having a theological debate, and Faust turns the infant that the duchess has given birth to into a straw doll and burns it. ...... The opera "Doctor Faust" is the culmination of the career of Busoni, a virtuoso pianist, composer, arranger, conductor, and educator whose varied musical activities from the late 19th to the early 20th century culminated in a puppet show based on the Faust legend of the European Middle Ages ( The play was based on a puppet play ("Puppenspiele") based on the legend of Faust from the Middle Ages in Europe and on the play "Dr. Faustus" by Christopher Marlowe, an English playwright of the same period as Shakespeare. The work was unfinished at the time of Busoni's death, but was taken over by his pupil Philip Jarnach and premiered in Dresden in 1925, the year after the composer's death. In recent years, there has been a growing momentum to re-evaluate this work as one that shows the true value of a composer who advocated "dramatic writing based on the reality of the improbable," a style that sets him apart from his contemporaries Richard Strauss (late Romantic) and Pietro Mascagni (operas in verismo). The production, which was staged at the Florence May Festival, makes bold use of projection mapping by Italian production prodigy Davide Revercore to create an eerie atmosphere that could easily be mistaken for gothic horror, The production features a stellar cast of singers, including Dietrich Henschel, who has been a fixture in this role since playing Faust at the Opera de Lyon in 1997, and Olga Vesmertna, who has made her career at the Vienna State Opera as the Duchesse de Parma. The eloquent baton of Cornelius Meister, whose repertoire consists mainly of modern and contemporary works, brings out the dramatic resonance and lyrical shadings of Busoni's intricately structured music.
