Cantata No. 46 by Rudolf Lutz and the Bach Foundation Orchestra. No. 31, "The Heavens Laugh and the Earth Cheers," is a cantata for Easter. The festive instrumentation of this work, based on a libretto by Zalomon Frank, includes three trumpets, timpani, three oboes, and an oboe da caccia, expressing the joy of Christ's resurrection. The first performance was on April 21, 1715. It was performed again the following year. The work opens with a concerto-style instrumental ensemble entitled Sonata, followed by arias by bass, tenor, and soprano, and concludes with a glorious chorale. No. 85, "I am the Good Shepherd," is a cantata for the second Sunday after the resurrection, first performed on April 15, 1725. It presents Jesus as the Good Shepherd. The piece opens with a calm bass aria, followed by an alto aria led by an ornate prelude. A pastoral soprano chorale follows, then a beautiful tenor aria highlighted by a motif of triplets on strings, and finally a simple chorale that leads the listener into a world of mercy and divine blessings.No. 178, "Lord God, Not Under Us," first performed on July 30, 1724, is a cantata with dramatic content based on a chorale by Justus Jonas. The chorale is based on Psalm 12 and is about fighting enemies under God. The opening chorus, with its striking dotted-note ensemble, is followed by an alto recitative written in an elaborate technique, and a bass aria with a low string sound that represents the pleasant rocking of a boat. The tenor chorale and aria seem to admonish those who are conflicted between faith and reason, and finally the chorale continues with God who is in control of heaven and earth and all. Naxos Japan
