Description:
The complete string quartet works of Croatian composer and conductor Boris Papandopoulo. Papandopoulo, who grew up in Zagreb and studied composition and conducting at the Zagreb Conservatory and the New Vienna Conservatory, left more than 400 works during his lifetime alongside his conducting career. This is an interesting collection of chamber music works that traces the evolution of Papandopoulo's creativity, the influence of ethnic music in his works, social realism, and other aspects of his creative life. Six of Papandopoulo's string quartets are known to exist, but the fourth is lost (only two movements are known to exist), so for this recording, the Sebastian Quartet will perform "A Song of Peace and Freedom Sounded Out (only the first movement survives). It is an alternative to No. 4. The work was written for the 27th Zagreb Festival, a celebration of revolution and patriotism in Zagreb, marked "For Zagreb 1981" on the cover of the score. This music shows the patriotic spirit of Papandopoulo. Other pieces include a clarinet quintet composed during the war and a guitar quartet with a short but condensed expression. Naxos Japan
