A Wind from the East by Patrizia Kopatchinskaja, heard by Kopatchinskaja and a trio of friends It has been 10 years since "Take Two," Kopatchinskaja's ALPHA debut and a much talked about collection of duets with various artists, was released. Now comes "Take Three" with clarinetist Reto Bieli, who also participated in that album, and Polina Leshchenko, another longtime friend. The title is, of course, a reference to the famous "Take Five," as performed by Dave Brubeck, but in addition to the three players on this album, the three beats are also an important theme. The program is centered on works by Poulenc and Bartók, but Kopatchinskaja's bursting, dynamic expression delves deeply into the roots of these works, highlighting their deep connection not only to the Austrian waltz, but also to Eastern European folklore, klezmer, Roma, and other forms of waltz music. and Roma, as well as waltzes from Austria and other countries.The album also includes a work by American composer Paul Schoenfield, known for his crossover style that incorporates jazz and folk idioms, as well as a small piece by Romania's Shervan Nikifor, with guests such as Ilija Gringoltz adding color to the album.
