On the 120th anniversary of Abravanel's birth and the 30th anniversary of his death, the Manfred Symphony with the Utah Symphony Orchestra is here! Not many conductors would exclude this piece from a complete collection of Tchaikovsky's symphonies, but this recording by Abravanel and the Utah Symphony Orchestra is a welcome gift for fans of the piece. Abravanel's interpretation and conducting are what one might call "enlightening" in their ability to convey the structure and musical development of the piece in a straightforward manner. Here, too, he conveys the development of the drama in an easy-to-understand manner through skillful transitions between slow and fast passages. At the same time, the recording is superb in that it clearly captures the sound of the various wind instruments used by Tchaikovsky without exaggeration and reproduces them in a wide sound field, and many people will be impressed to know that this is a recording made 50 years ago. The contrast between the slow singing and the clever tempo increases is even more effective in the "Slavic March. *The booklet includes a photo of the jacket as it was first released and a commentary on the original recording.
