[Homage to Frescobaldi by veteran player and researcher Richard Lester] British harpsichordist and organist Richard Lester is the author of over 80 recordings, including the complete sonatas of Scarlatti. He has recently undertaken a study of Frescobaldi and published a book focusing on his originality. This CD is his commemoration of the 440th anniversary of Frescobaldi's birth and the 380th anniversary of his death. The work chosen is "A Bouquet of Music. This work consists of No. 1 "Mass for the Lord's Day", No. 2 "Mass for the Apostles", and No. 3 "Mass for the Blessed Virgin", and is composed of a mass (Kyrie) section based on the Gregorian chant melody associated with each day, a toccata as a prelude, and keyboard music such as toccata, canzonas, capriccios, ricercar The toccata and other parts are composed of improvisation. The toccata and other parts are filled with improvisation and virtuosity, reminiscent of Frescobaldi's skill as organist of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
