Description:
The polyphonic music of the Renaissance period is a hot zone from the end of the 15th century to the 16th century, that is, the period from Josquin des Prez to Palestrina, and then to Jesuard and Victoria. The composers of the 15th century, however, are noteworthy figures who were grounded in both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At a time of great social upheaval in Europe, including the Hundred Years' War between Britain and France and the fall of the Byzantine Empire, many geniuses emerged from Flanders, which was advanced in the fields of art and music, and were also active in the Italian peninsula, where many art-loving rulers and intellectuals were to be found. Florence, the capital of the golden age of architecture and art under the patronage of the Medici family, symbolizes the Italian art of that era. The works of the Flemish composers who gathered in this city, as well as many works by the great master Guillaume Dufay, who also served at the court of the Duke of Burgundy who conquered Flanders in the Hundred Years War, show us how the glory of the early Flemish school blossomed in Italy in the masterful performances of these talented composers. The Gothic Voices, one of LINN's many masterpieces, again features a small ensemble of singers who clearly convey the interplay of voices, and the harp of the virtuoso Lawrence King, sometimes solo, sometimes as a reliable accompaniment, brings to light the tradition of courtly love songs dating back to the distant Middle Ages. Please take your time to enjoy the two sides of beauty that span both the sacred and secular worlds of church music and love songs.
