The Vanvitelli Quartet was formed in 2017 by four of Italy's foremost instrumentalists, led by Gian Andrea Guerra, a baroque violinist who has gained experience in the field as a member of the Collegium 1704, an ancient instrument group that has made remarkable strides in its development. The Vanvitelli Quartet was formed in 2017 by four of Italy's foremost antique instrumentalists, led by Gian Andrea Guerra. The quartet has been passionate about discovering and introducing unknown performances mainly from the early 18th century, and with their wealth of experience, they have shed new light on the first sonata collection by Agus, an enigmatic and talented violinist/composer active in London from the late Handel period to the period of J.C. Bach's arrival in England. Born in Sardinia, moved to London, and later moved to Paris, where he continued to write music in keeping with current trends. The six sonatas, all in the major key, are full of charm, with a full range of compositions that are both lush and lighthearted.It is filled with a flavor that is second to none of the other composers active between the Baroque and Classical periods, such as Tartini, Galuppi, and Porpora, and deserves to be listened to with great attention. The commentary (in English, French, and Italian) based on a brief history of research on the identity of Agus is also extensive.
