Description:
In January 2020, Salik, a viola da gamba player and member of Ensemble Galileo, called lutenist McFarren and suggested, “Let’s all put on a concert in April.” Since the two lived relatively close to each other, they began rehearsals right away. However, by February, the COVID-19 pandemic had begun to rage in earnest, making it difficult to gather the members of Ensemble Galilei, who were scattered across the globe. As a result, they decided to abandon the concert and instead record just the two of them in June. However, the two didn’t actually have much of a shared repertoire to record, and the recording plan seemed on the verge of falling through. So, in addition to composing various new pieces, McFarren arranged some of their favorite songs for this album. The result is a unique album that blends early music and traditional music—featuring only the lute and viola da gamba, without the fiddles or recorders typically found on a standard “Ensemble Galilei” album. *Founded in 1990, Ensemble Galilei is an ensemble of players with backgrounds in both classical and Celtic music.
