In the second installment of BSOrec, the Bavarian State Opera's own label, Kaufmann and Petersen sing the opera "The City of Death" in Bruges in the 19th century. He meets a dancer, Marietta, who is the spitting image of Marie. The boundary between dream and reality gradually blurs... A live recording of Korngold's opera "The City of Death" performed at the Bavarian State Opera in the fall of 2019. Under the direction of Simon Stone, who left a strong impression, and under the direction of Kirill Petrenko, who elicited beautiful and euphoric melodies from the orchestra with precision, Jonas Kaufmann and Marlis Petersen sang the leading roles in this production, which was highly acclaimed by the audience and the media. Kaufmann sang with an almost maniacal intensity, Petersen played the various aspects of the female character, and the singers surrounding them sang beautifully. The Bavarian State Opera, founded in the 17th century as the court opera house of the Elector of Bavaria, is one of the most prestigious opera houses in Germany with a history of premiering operas by Mozart and Wagner.The orchestra boasts a glorious history built up with distinguished conductors such as Hans von Bülow, Bruno Walter, Hans Knappertsbusch, Georg Solti, Clemens Krauss, Rudolf Kempe, Josef Kailbert, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Kirill Petrenko, etc., who are among the greatest conductors in music history.
