Leo Sowerby was born in Michigan in 1895 and began composing music at the age of 10. He was active as a church organist and choir conductor in Chicago, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for his cantata "Chant of the Sun," and became one of the leading American composers of the 20th century, leaving behind many works, but unfortunately, he was largely forgotten in his later years. Shortly before his death, Sowerby presented his pupil Gail Kilman, whose piano sonata is played on this album, with a score of his unpublished piano sonata. This album of world premiere recordings was also realized as part of the foundation's activities. Cheng, who performs with the Foundation, was also a student of Sowerby's. Summer Beach Sketches" and "Fisherman's Song" pay homage to Percy Grainger, whom Sowerby studied under and admired. Sowerby was also one of the first composers to seriously incorporate jazz into his work and sublimate it. Naxos Japan
