Josquin Desprez is one of the greatest masters of the French-Flemish (Netherlandish) school of music, which brought Renaissance polyphony to its zenith. While he was a great master who pursued the possibilities of polyphony to the utmost limit with his a capella church music, it is not surprising that he also wrote many songs for the secular world. Like church music, many of them are polyphonic secular chansons with French lyrics, but they can be performed with only one singer and the other parts arranged for lute or other chordal instruments. On this disc, two of Europe's new generation of talents carefully select and record Josquin's works in a duo formation, which is exactly the style of the day. The Slovenian lute player Bor Zulian, who is also active in a wide range of fields such as jazz and rock, reflects his own research on the instrument, examining 500-year-old playing practices and using a pick with triple-wound frets. He has attempted to recreate the "bray lute," which is played with triple-wound frets and a pick-like piece attached to the finger as needed.The tone, which is accentuated by distinctive overtones from time to time, is reminiscent of Flemish paintings of the Gothic period, which fascinate contemporary audiences with their rich beauty of form.
