In 2014, renowned violinist Augustin Harderich premiered David Lang's "Mystery Sonata" at Carnegie Zankel Hall (Recital Hall). As the title suggests, this piece uses the melody of Baroque composer Heinrich Ignaz Biber's "Rosary Sonata (also known as Mystery Sonata)" as its motif, but David Lang, while keeping in mind the "prayer to the Virgin Mary" that is the core of the work, has created a completely different and unique world. The work is a work of "joy," "sorrow," and "sorrow. The work is divided into three parts, "Joy," "Sorrow," and "Glory," and is performed exclusively for solo violin. It can be said to be 21st century "prayer" music that combines severity and euphoria, in which the performer spins out infinitely beautiful melodies while conversing with his or her inner self.
