This is a delightful collection of songs and arias popular in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century, sung by Vienna-based soprano Ildiko Raimondi. The collection includes the "Cabaret Songs" Brettl Lieder, which shows another side of Schoenberg, known for his exploration of twelve-tone music; a series of songs and orchestral pieces, including the world premiere recording of Zemlinsky; arias from operettas by Dostal and Lehar; and, last but not least, a collection of songs and arias from the operettas of Gershwin, Dostal and Lehar. And placed last is Gershwin. In Strauss's Tune" is a stylish song based on a song by Johann Strauss, which was very popular at the time. Strike Up the Band" is a familiar tune. Raimondi is a soprano who specializes in modern songs of the 20th century, and the repertoire on this album is full of her best songs. The exquisite accompaniment by the Wiener Junge Philharmoniker, an elite group of young Austrian players between the ages of 17 and 27, is also a highlight of the album. Naxos Japan
