We took this opportunity—marking his visit to Japan—to delve deeper into the roots of this true architect of the British Invasion and the gem-like melodies he crafted. The mid-1960s. As the British Invasion swept the world, there was a genius working behind the scenes who propelled numerous bands to the top of the charts. That man was Graham Gouldman, who would later form the quintessential art-pop band, 10cc. Still a teenager at the time, he worked at a men’s clothing store while crafting one massive hit after another—such as “Bus Stop” (The Hollies) and “No Milk Today” (The Hermits)—drawn from his commutes on the bus and the casual scenes of everyday life. This album is a collection of masterpieces from his “1000cc” era, so to speak—a time when he continued to generously work his magic on the music scene behind the scenes. It features a lineup of iconic songs that shaped rock history, including the Yardbirds’ “For Your Love”—the track that led Eric Clapton to quit, claiming it was “too pop,” and which in turn brought out the experimental talents of Jeff Beck, who joined in his place.
