A two-CD set featuring works by Haydn and Mozart, performed by Ryuichi Higuchi and the Meiji Gakuin Bach Academy—whose motto is “research and performance”—is now available. In 1798, the year Haydn composed his so-called “Nelson Mass,” Austria was gripped by fear of Napoleon’s army, leading the composer himself to call it a “Mass for Troubled Times.” However, when the British fleet led by Admiral Nelson routed Napoleon’s forces at the Battle of the Nile, Admiral Nelson instantly became a hero in Austria. Mozart, who learned much from Haydn, saw his *The Marriage of Figaro*, premiered in 1786, become a huge hit in Prague. The Symphony in D major, composed that same year and affectionately known as the “Prague Symphony,” was performed in Prague in January of the following year, 1787, and was also a huge success; it continued to be performed more than 100 times thereafter. This symphony consists of three movements, each in sonata form, yet they coexist in an ideal blend of variety. The opera *Don Giovanni* Written in D minor—the same key as K. 527 and the *Requiem* (K. 626), which was left unfinished as his final work—this unique piano concerto became a masterpiece that conveys the “profound contemplation of life and eternity” that the genius Mozart occasionally displayed. The piano soloist is Junsei Watanabe, known as a period instrument performer, conductor, and scholar; using a fortepiano made by Nanette Streicher, he successfully recreates the performance style of Mozart’s era. Since the copying of the parts for the premiere was completed at the very last minute, no score for the cadenzas survives; in this recording, the cadenza for the first movement is by Beethoven, and the cadenza for the third movement is by Hummel.
