Hofmeister: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 2 Before the proliferation of recordings we see today, recordings of Classical-era keyboard works were dominated by pieces by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, and there were almost no opportunities to hear works by other Classical-era composers. However, it is truly a joy to now be able to witness firsthand that numerous composers, led by Franz Anton Hofmeister, were active primarily in Vienna. Hofmeister was born in Rottenburg am Neckar in southwestern Germany. Although he initially began studying law, he found the allure of music irresistible and eventually pursued a career in music. He composed numerous works and also achieved great success as a music publisher, successively bringing to the world works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven to the world one after another. While most accounts of him portray him merely as “Mozart’s supporting actor,” he was in fact a highly regarded figure, and his flute works, in particular, contributed significantly to the technical development of amateur musicians of the time. Although he left behind many keyboard works, research on them is still in its early stages, and it is hoped that much more can be uncovered in the future from his sketches and drafts.
