Description:
Theodore Gui (1819–1898) was a 19th-century French composer. However, because his birthplace was part of a disputed territory between Germany and France at the time of his birth, he was unable to obtain French citizenship and thus could not enroll at the Paris Conservatory, as he had hoped. Ultimately, he continued his studies privately in Germany and began his career as a composer there; however, his compositional style was a blend of German and French influences, and he was largely forgotten after his death. His works span a wide range, including symphonies, vocal music, and instrumental pieces, but many of his piano works are written for four hands. These three sonatas, written in the 1860s, possess an elegant charm; even though Gwi was drawn to France, the influence of Schubert and Schumann seems evident in his works.
