First, listen to Guilleris at the piano in the 1966 Edinburgh Live performance. He is backed by the Halle Orchestra, conducted by Barbirolli, who has carefully interpreted every detail. The piano has a wonderful poetic, imaginative, and powerful sound. The two composers were at times antagonistic and at other times intertwined, weaving Beethoven on an equal footing. Gilleris made two studio recordings of this piece (in 1957 and 1968), but this live recording sounded good and "captured his wings". Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 is in a shortened version by Giloti. Kondrashin's conducting was so impassioned that it turned the LPO into a "real Russian sound."
