In 2011, the year of the bicentennial of Franz Liszt's birth, RCA and Sony Classical reissued three masterpieces of Liszt performances by three of the greatest pianists ever recorded for the labels. This 4-CD set is a compilation of Vladimir Horowitz's Liszt recordings for both labels. Although the recordings span a wide range of eras, each of the four CDs is clearly grouped as 1) early studio recordings, 2) live mono recordings at Carnegie Hall, 3) CBS studio recordings and live recordings after the Historic Return, and 4) late recordings, allowing us to trace the chronological transition of the performances almost chronologically. The recordings can be traced almost chronologically. The Mephisto Waltz No. 1, Racozzi March, Midsummer Night's Dream - Wedding March, Ballade No. 2, and many others are masterpieces that mark Horowitz's vivid virtuoso performance. Two performances of the Piano Sonata from 1949 and 1976, and five performances of Horowitz's favorite piece, "The Forgotten Waltz" are included. Also included are two pieces from the last recording session at the Horowitz residence in 1989. Two sound recordings are included for the first time in Japan (live recordings first released in 2009).
