This is the second in the ALTUS Live series by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Kazushi Ohno, following Mahler's "Titan" (ALT-522). It features "Symphonie fantastique" performed in 2019, the 150th anniversary of Berlioz's death. This is a unique symphony, a pioneering work of magnificent modern orchestration with a madcap fantasy quality. The score is full of Berlioz's genius ideas, which Ohno clearly musicalizes with a clear resonance and sings with fervor. Everything from the beautifully detailed movements of the individual players to the magnificent tutti, all organically connected, builds up to a climax that is full of greatness on top of a large flow of music. It is a masterful performance that is a true pleasure to listen to an orchestra. The finale, too, directs the listener's attention not to the grotesque hellscape itself, which is supposed to be drawn there, but to the emotions of the young man who draws it out.
