Description:
This is a paper-jacket CD of Suni McGrace's masterpiece released by ADELPHI RECORDS, which has released many connoisseurs' favorites such as Jerry Goffin's solo works (original release: 1972). Suni McGrace, a master of Christian 12-string guitar, released three albums on ADELPHI (a roots music label established in Silver Spring, Maryland in the late 1960s): "Cornflower Suite" (1969), "The Call of the Morning" (1969), and "The Call of the Morning" (1969). The Call of the Morning Dove (1971), and Childgrove (1972), the last one. It also features the contribution of another guitarist, Jack Dellinger (Jack is on the left of the jacket, Suni is on the right), and the result is not unlike a co-written name. The opening song, "The Star of Country Down," is a British trad song that is also known from "Irish Heartbeat" (1988) with Van Morrison's Chieftans. Love Abides" is a baroque-folk tune with the elegance of Bert Jansch's "Rosemary Lane" (1970) and John Renbourn's "Lady and the Unicorn" (1970). The highlight of the album is the 22-minute "Lion of Judah," which was the entirety of the B-side on the original analog release.There is also a change of lead roles here, with Dillinger taking the lead and McGrace taking second guitar. A female vocalist, Ellen Matthews, is also featured in two places in the middle and latter half of the song, and this is an area where the connection to English folk, if not to Pentangle, is felt. After three albums with Adelphi, he went into a long silence as a recording artist, but made a comeback with "Train Z" (recorded in June 2004), which was included in the guitar anthology "Imaginative Anthems" released in 2005. The label also released the 7-inch single "Seven Stars/Fantasia," and plans for a new album have been announced.
